Hiring an IT Person? We Know What Good Looks Like.
When hiring makes sense, we make sure it works.
Most companies hiring a technician don't know what they don't know. They post the job, get a stack of resumes that all say the same thing, and hire the most confident interview. Three months later they're hiring again.
HD Tech has spent 30 years hiring and developing technical staff of our own. For our co-managed IT clients, we bring that same process to your in-house hire — defining the role, vetting technical skill hands-on, onboarding your new person, and backing them up long after their first day.
Can a managed IT provider help you hire an in-house IT person?
Yes — and a good one should. A managed or co-managed IT provider already knows your environment and employs the engineers who can judge technical skill, which is exactly what most businesses lack when they hire their own IT staff. The provider helps define the role, runs a hands-on technical assessment of candidates, and onboards the new hire into documented systems. The business keeps the hiring decision and judges culture fit. The result is an in-house hire who is vetted by people who do the work, with a team behind them from day one.

When Does Hiring Make Sense?
Not every business needs an in-house IT person. These are the moments when one usually does.
Your IT person just gave notice
The worst time to learn how to hire a technician is the week your only one leaves. We keep the environment running while the seat is open, and help you fill it with someone who can actually do the job.
You're ready for your first in-house IT hire
You've grown to the point where someone on-site every day makes sense. You just don't know what to look for, what to ask, or how to tell a strong candidate from a strong resume.
One IT person isn't enough anymore
Your current IT person is stretched and you're adding a second. We help define a role that complements the one you have instead of duplicating it.
The job needs someone physically there
Plant floors, clinics, job sites, and front offices sometimes need a person in the building. We help you hire that person and make sure they have a full team behind them.
If what you actually need is 24/7 coverage, security monitoring, or compliance expertise, one hire won't get you there on its own. Our outsourcing vs. in-house IT guide walks through that decision honestly.
How We Help You Hire the Right Person
The same process we use to hire our own engineers, applied to your in-house role.
- 1
Define the role before you post it
Most bad IT hires start with a vague job description. We work with you to write down what the job actually is in your environment — the systems, the users, the day-to-day — so you attract the right candidates and can measure them against something real.
- 2
Screen past the resume
A resume can say anything. Our engineers review candidates' technical backgrounds and flag the gaps between what's claimed and what the role requires before you spend time interviewing.
- 3
Hands-on technical assessment
Not a written quiz. Our engineers talk candidates through real-world scenarios drawn from environments like yours, so you find out whether they can do the work, not just describe it.
- 4
You judge the fit, we judge the skills
You know your company, your culture, and your people. We know what technical competency looks like. You make the hiring decision with both halves of the picture in front of you.
- 5
Onboard them into a documented environment
Your new hire starts with our documentation and access instead of a password list and a prayer. They're productive faster because we've already mapped the environment they're walking into.
- 6
Back them up for the long run
Ongoing training, escalation support from our engineers, and a full team behind them for after-hours, security, and compliance work one person can't carry alone.
Who does what in the hire?
You stay in charge of the decision. We bring the technical judgment you can't get from a resume or a recruiter.

After the Hire: Training & Backup
Hiring is the start. We make sure your new IT person keeps getting better — and never works alone.
Training that fits your environment
We help your hire learn the systems they now own — how your network, security stack, and backups are set up, and why.
A team behind one person
Your hire escalates to our engineers instead of searching forums at midnight. After-hours monitoring, security, and compliance stay with us.
Why do so many IT hires fail in the first few months?
Usually because nobody involved in the hire could judge technical skill. There is often a big difference between what a technician writes on a resume and what they can do when something breaks.
- Recruiters are paid to move candidates quickly, not to judge whether a technician can run your environment.
- Written or online technical tests measure recall, not how someone troubleshoots a real outage.
- A non-technical hiring manager has no way to tell a confident interview from a competent one.
- The cost of getting it wrong is months of lost productivity and starting the search over again.
Part of Co-Managed IT
IT hiring support is included for HD Tech co-managed IT clients. That's deliberate: because we're already embedded in your tools, documentation, and systems, we know exactly what the role requires, we keep things running while you hire, and your new person walks into an environment that's already mapped.
Once they're in the seat, they have what one IT person never has on their own — our 24/7 security monitoring, help desk overflow, and compliance expertise behind them. We're not here to replace the person you hire. We're here to make them look like a superhero.
IT Hiring Support FAQs
Is IT hiring support a separate service?
No. IT hiring support is included for HD Tech co-managed IT clients as part of the co-managed agreement. It isn't offered as a standalone service or to businesses that aren't co-managed clients at this time.
Are you a staffing agency or recruiter?
No. We don't charge placement fees and we don't place our own employees with you. You or your recruiter find the candidates; we bring the technical judgment to tell you which ones can actually do the job, then help that person succeed once they're hired.
Isn't a managed IT provider supposed to tell me not to hire?
For a lot of businesses, a managed or co-managed provider does cover more for less than a single hire. But there are real cases where an in-house person is the right call — on-site needs, a growing internal team, or an IT person who just left. When hiring makes sense, our job is to make sure it works.
Will you try to replace the person we hire?
No. Co-managed IT is built around keeping your IT person, not competing with them. The goal is a hire who stays, grows, and has a full team behind them.
What if the hire doesn't work out?
We don't offer a replacement guarantee. What co-managed IT does guarantee is continuity: your environment stays monitored, documented, and supported by our team, so a hire that doesn't work out is a setback rather than an emergency.
What happens to IT support while we're hiring?
Co-managed clients stay covered. Because we're already embedded in your tools and documentation, we keep things running while the seat is open instead of leaving you exposed.
